The name Cherokee comes from the Creek Indian word Chalaque, which means" people of a different speech". The Cherokee call themselves Aniyunwiya, which means "principal people". They are from the Appalachian Mountains. The Cherokee’s written language was developed about 1820 by the Cherokee Sequoyah. It is the only written language developed by a single person. Tsalagiyi ayeli adohi means Cherokee National Forest. Many of the forest names come from Cherokee words.
